How to tell what type of iPhone you have

Print

To find out what type (or version) of the iPhone you have, simply search for your iPhone’s model number and compare it with the list below.

Most iPhones will have this model number on the back of it. I say most because from what I have read, starting with the iPhone 8 and up, the model number is no longer on the back. Thanks Apple…way to make things difficult 🙁 Also, if you have a protective cover on the back of your phone, you will need to take this off temporarily so that you can see the model # on the back of your device.

Finding your “A” number: You’ll find your phone’s “A” number stamped on the back of your device. Flip it over, look for the fine print below the “iPhone” label, and look closely for the “Model” identifier. An example of the model # is as follow: A1660

If no model # is listed on the back of your device, chances are you have an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and/or an iPhone X…unless for some odd reason, you scratched this number off or it came off due to age and/or excessive use. The below steps should still work on earlier versions of the iPhone, however, I have not tested this out as I’m a Samsung guy, not an Apple guy…

To find out what your model # is on your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and/or your iPhone X, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn on your iPhone and/or wake it up.
  2. Tap the “Settings” app.
  3. Tap on “General”.
  4. Tap on “About”.
  5. Scroll down until you see “Model”. This is the model identifier number/SKU.
  6. To see the “A” number, tap on the Model number. It will change to a numeric ID starting with “A”.

TIP: FYI (For Your Information), to make your search easier so that you can compare your phone’s model # with the list provided below, and you are viewing this article via a non-mobile device, simply press the “Ctrl and F” keys at the same time. This will open up a text field, of which should be in focus, where you can type in your model #. Once you have typed in your model #, simply hit the Enter key. These keys (Ctrl and F), if pressed in tandem (one right after the other but together) and/or at the same time, are a shortcut to “Find” content quicker. Pretty neat eh? 😉
